This prequel would revisit the first run-in between The Bat and the Clown Prince of Crime.

Here’s an interesting rumor coming from Variety. The publication is reporting that Rocksteady’s follow-up to Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City will be set in the Silver Age of DC Comics and focus on the first meeting between Batman and the Joker. The game will also feature other heroes and villains from the DC Universe in an attempt to synergize DC Entertainment across comics, film, TV and gaming.

Unfortunately, Variety doesn’t really list a creditable source for their information, choosing simply to instead point to a number of DC Comics video games that have recently taken a grander approach to the DC Universe – titles like the recently released LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes and the upcoming Injustice: Gods Among Us. In the world of film, Warner Brothers has been making a stronger push for a Justice League film as of late, too, which goes along with this synergizing approach to WB’s properties.

OK, so let’s pretend this rumor becomes an actuality for a second. This could honestly be a neat way for Rocksteady to introduce a grander DC Universe into their Arkham-verse (something fans have been asking for) while still managing to play off the emotional beats of Arkham City’s ending. Win/win.

While the 1950s era of comics doesn’t really seem like such a great fit for Rocksteady’s dark, gritty and ultra realistic take on the Batman mythos, the fact of the matter is this could be an interesting avenue to travel down to avoid making the Arkham games feel stale after three titles. Rocksteady would be reinventing themselves, much like the Joker does on a continual basis. Call it serendipitous, then.

We’ll be back with more information on this rumor when we know it. Until then, speculate away at how a Silver Age Arkham game would look and play.
