Sometimes the coolest news doesn’t even come straight from the San Diego Convention Center. After months of speculation, Chronicle director Josh Trank has finally been confirmed as the director of Fox’s Fantastic Four reboot. And there was much rejoicing.

According to Deadline, Fox expects Fantastic Four to be Trank’s next project to go before the cameras, ahead of The Red Star, Shadow of the Colossus and Sony’s Venom spin-off from the Spider-Man franchise, all of which have the hot young director attached. Production is expected to begin after the completion of James Mangold’s The Wolverine and Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class 2 (or whatever that sequel will be called).

Details on the direction of the new Fantastic Four reboot are nowhere to be found, but given Sony’s success in completely upturning the sensibilities of the previous Spider-Man franchise with the new Amazing Spider-Man, it seems likely that Tim Story’s sitcom-styled focus for the previous Fantastic Four movies could be jettisoned for something more in keeping with the comic books. Or maybe they’ll all be at the center of a corporate conspiracy and get all gritty on us. Time will tell.
